Leaving Colorado: The top destinations for people who move out

While more than 264,000 people moved into Colorado last year, another 239,000 decided to pack their things and leave the state, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Texas received the most Coloradans in 2022, with Census estimates saying over 24,500 moved to the Lone Star State. Another 21,000 moved to Florida. California was another popular destination for Colorado — almost 20,000 decided to make the move to the West Coast state.

Interestingly, nearly 70,000 people moved to Colorado from those three states in 2022: 33,200 from California; 25,500 from Texas; and 11,100 from Florida.

Those leaving Colorado also sought out neighboring states. That was especially true for Arizona, where more than 12,200 moved. Other neighbors receiving residents from Colorado were:

  • New Mexico: 7,846

  • Oklahoma: 5,902

  • Kansas: 7,359

  • Nebraska: 6,422

  • Wyoming: 5,076

  • Utah: 5,327

The least popular destinations for those on the move, according to Census estimates, were primarily along the East Coast: Rhode Island, Delaware, West Virginia, and Vermont. Puerto Rico was also on that list.

The new data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey. The survey happens more frequently than the official Census and gives people a better idea of changes happening in their community year to year.

Over 5.8 million people call Colorado home, according to 2022 Census data.

Are more people moving out of Colorado than in? Maybe.

Inbound moves to Colorado last year dominated outbound moves by the largest margin since 2008, according to the 2019 Migration Patterns study from Atlas Van Lines.

Atlas handled 2,309 inbound moves by households to Colorado last year, which is on par with the 2,308 inbound moves measured in 2018. What changed was the number of outbound moves, which fell from 1,899 in 2018 to 1,852 in 2019.

That was enough to tip inbound moves to above 55% of the total, which qualified Colorado as an “inbound” state for the first time since 2008. From 2009-18, the state has been “balanced.”

The states with the highest share of inbound moves last year were Idaho at 62.3%, Washington at 60.5%, North Carolina at 59.3%, and New Mexico at 59%. The states where people are packing up and heading out at the highest rate were New York at 62.7%, West Virginia at 62.5%, South Dakota at 61.7% and Illinois at 61.4%.

It’s worth noting that Atlas is just one of several moving companies available. Also, many young adults starting out travel light and don’t require a moving company. That might explain why Colorado, a top state for relocating millennials, showed as a balanced state despite strong net migration in its favor.

If you are thinking about making a move into, out of, or around Colorado…we are here to help! Our team knows amazing agents across North America, and we would love to connect you to make sure that your move is as smooth as possible! Start here.

Denver's Traffic is Bad and Getting Worse - Are You Over It Yet?

On an average day in 2018, vehicles in the Denver metro traveled 84.3 million miles.

That's up 15 percent from just five years ago, according to a new report from the Denver Regional Council of Governments.

That amounts to more hours spent stuck in traffic — about 33 hours on major roads and freeways for the average person.

The picture gets a little sunnier when you account for the region's population increase in that time; vehicle miles traveled per capita actually decreased slightly between 2017 and 2018.

There could be a few factors behind that, said Robert Spotts, DRCOG's planning supervisor and the report's author, including telecommuting, e-scooters and bike-sharing.

But there's a more sobering explanation too.

"Traffic congestion could be getting to a point where people are starting to avoid trips," he said.

Spotts expects the roads to only get more crowded. By 2040, vehicle miles traveled on freeways and other major roads is forecasted to grow by more than 40 percent from 65.1 million to 93.4 million. That could add up to 56 hours of travel delay per resident over the course of a year by then.

State and local leaders want to spend more money on transportation, and often point out that the state hasn't raised the gas tax since 1991. Multiple statewide ballot measures to fund new projects have failed in recent years, and DRCOG officials are now exploring the viability of a regional funding model.

At the same time, the Colorado Department of Transportation's relatively new executive director, Shoshana Lew, told Colorado Matters that the Denver metro is near a tipping point where personal vehicles may no longer the best way to get around. Trains and buses, she said, are more efficient at moving large numbers of people.
