Joy on the Trails is a blog series detailing all the incredible hiking trails within an hour of Denver. All the trails featured are accessible to anyone new to hiking, or just wanting to get out without driving for hours into the mountains. I hope you uncover your own joy of hiking and I hope you’re inspired to try a few of my favorite trails. And if you’re so inclined, join me sometime… I’m out there a lot!

Lair O’ the Bear
I give this park five stars for it’s picnic sites, access to a gorgeous creek, and two great trail routes for kids or a quick lunch hike. I give this park “one star, do not recommend” for solitude on the weekends! It’s very popular, so plan for a weekday evening if you’d like to grab a parking spot and a table.
For littles, stick to the Creekside trail and plan for a bunch of stops on your way to the bridge. There is lots to look at, pick up, toss into the creek, and flat trail for running. For older hikers or if you’re up for a quick 45 minute loop, do the Bruin Bluff loop.
The Bruin Bluff loop starts flat along the creek and then heads up into the hills. The hike is not at all strenuous, but meanders through a lovely forest and is perfect for hot summer days or an evening cool down. Bring ice spikes if you’re hiking in the winter as it gets slick in the shade where the snow is packed.
When you’re done hiking, set up a cookout at one of the picnic sites where you can grill. These sites are pretty private and you can stay until dark! Happy picnicking!
