Joy on the Trails is a blog series detailing all the incredible hiking trails within an hour of Denver. All the trails featured are accessible to anyone new to hiking, or just wanting to get out without driving for hours into the mountains. I hope you uncover your own joy of hiking and I hope you’re inspired to try a few of my favorite trails. And if you’re so inclined, join me sometime… I’m out there a lot!
The Dog Poop Fairy
Does. Not. Exist. Perhaps it’s the huge influx of hikers from out of state, but I am seeing a horrifying increase in the number of dog poop bags left on the trail when I’m hiking! I can’t begin to imagine what someone may be thinking about when they bag their dog’s poop and then leave the bag right there. *palm to face*
Collecting your dog’s poop and throwing it away is important to the natural spaces we hike in for a number of reasons.
Dogs are carnivores and their poop takes a very long time to decompose.
Domestic dog food has stuff in it that’s not meant to be out in nature.
Tons of pounds of dog poop gets pooped every year and accumulating this much in nature just isn’t sustainable.
Wild animals can get sick messing around in that stuff
Best scenario is buy biodegradable bags that don’t add to the plastic issue. Cary one of these handy containers - $10 on Amazon - which seals that bag and connects to your day pack. Pick up all your pup’s poop and carry it all the way back to the trash can at the trailhead.
Thank you so much!
