Does Colorado have water? What about water sports? I recently found out about this hidden gem - John Martin Reservoir! Next step - get friends with boats to make the 208 mile drive with me next summer!
I was also advised when I go to bring a fishing pole! Their facebook page asks that you share pictures of "your biggest catch" there. The reservoir is filled with warm-water fish like crappie, saugeye, bass, bluegill, drum fish and wiper. If you want to fish at night (which is allowed) you might catch catfish and walleye! Unlike other bodies of water in Colorado - the lake usually doesn't freeze so ice fishing is discouraged.
Life under water could be fun - but life is better closer to the sun! Just ask all the species of birds that call the reservoir home - or stop by on their migration path. Both bald and golden eagles have been seen in the area. There are two federally protected birds that nest near the reservoir in the spring and summer months. Bring your binoculars!
Here is a yelp review I found: "We're on our fourth visit to Wolf Creek and here's why we keep coming back. And for a moment on its history - or the purpose of the "Reservoir".... It is located on the Arkansas River and is used for flood control, irrigation and clearly recreation! When it was constructed back in 1939 the US Government had to buy more than 20,000 acres of land and relocate 21 miles of the Santa Fe Railway! Have you heard about the water fight between Kansas and Colorado? It is a case of litigation lasting over 100 years about who gets the water! You can't have a reservoir without a dam - check out this beauty:
WINTER - Excellent time to spot the national bird - the Bald Eagle! Oh and there is "Winter Camping" too!
SPRING - Biking, Hiking, Camping, Hunting... lots of "ing" words!
SUMMER - ALL types of boating is allowed! You can camp close too!
FALL - Ramps to the water close Nov 1 - I'd say go explore the wildlife!
