Meet the Maker: Creator + Plant Enthusiast Jon Ansted

“My work explores the relationship between nature and time.”

Based in Denver, Colorado my work explores the relationship between nature and time.  Some of my earliest memories are of planting seeds from fruit I ate and watching them grow, until my father noticed the new tree in the middle of the yard. Today, I continue on that journey by creating living sculptures using the mediums of concrete, soil and plant life.  As nature does with time these my pillars continue to grow and evolve.

What is your background?

I have a background in photography with a focus on advertising and product photography.

What was the moment that you knew this was what you wanted to do?

I was creating concrete pillar as stands for terrariums and plants when it dawned on me to put the plants in the pillars.  Thats when I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  I spent the rest of the day dreaming of all the possibilities.

What is your dream project?

My dream project would be to create large pillars for public display in a city district such as the RINO district in Denver.  And of course to have an exhibition of my work featured at the Denver Botanic Garden. Which by the way is home to the largest concrete greenhouse in America.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to create my own trail in art and in life.
