Need room for skis? Denver is a great place to live, according to a new study of storage space.

For homeowners prioritizing space to store equipment like skis, Denver is a great place to live, according to a new study.

Denver ranks No. 3 among the 25 largest metro areas in the U.S. for most home storage potential, along with the nearby Aurora and Lakewood areas.

That's according to self-storage website StorageCafé’s report “The Most and Least Squeezed U.S. Metros,” which analyzed living quarters and on-site storage options to determine where residents aren’t being overwhelmed by possessions in their home.

To determine its ranking, researchers used U.S. Census data from 2019 and compared the 25 metro areas across two equal metrics: home storage (basements, garages, outside storage options) and square feet of living space per person.

The study found that, on average, residents of Denver, Lakewood and Aurora enjoy 978 square feet of living space per person and 85% have access to a garage, a basement or an external storage locker on the premises. The study notes that while home sizes in Denver have been trending downward, 90.5% of single-family Denver-area homes are equipped with a garage and 75.1% offer a basement.

Topping the list for storage space is Atlanta, followed by Pittsburgh, Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Kansas City and Phoenix.

Miami residents are most squeezed for space, followed by New York and Los Angeles.
